We%26#39;re 3 families looking to travel to Schweitzer Ski Resort for Christmas 2009. Can anyone comment on this resort, it%26#39;s lodging, skiing, area restaurants, etc.? Thanks!
Schweitzer Ski Resort
I was hoping someone who had visited Schweitzer would comment for an outsider%26#39;s view of Schweitzer and Sandpoint, unfortunately no comments yet so here are some views from a local. Schweitzer started out as a local/regional ski area located above the town of Sandpoint. After significant investment into facilitates its trying to position itself as a regional resort for at least the Northwest. It gets fairly reliable snow, usually opens before Christmas, sometimes as early as Thanksgiving. Snow is not as dry as Central Rockies but not as wet as the Cascades (Cascade Concrete), it has added limited snow making capability. There is a village/resort located at the base of the ski area but that is located above the town of Sandpoint. You need a car if you want to access both Sandpoint and Schweitzer. Sandpoint is a nice smaller town with a variety of eating and shopping opportunities. The Restaurant reviews on this site cover the more well known eating establishments. If thats too limited you can always drive down to Coeur d%26#39; Alene (45 miles) for additional choices. The key to enjoying Schweitzer and Sandpoint is to recognnize its not Sun Valley or Aspen but a good ski area located near a nice smaller western town in a beautiful area with lakes and mountains.
