City of Rocks National Reserve

Thinking about making a short stop at City Of Rocks National Reserve while driving in July on highway 84 north from Salt Lake City. I checked nps.gov and this park looks very interesting. What is the best exit from rt.84? How much time do you think I need to add to my trip to visit this place? Can anyone recommend a nice walk/very short hike? Is the road to the city of rocks paved all the way? Thank you

City of Rocks National Reserve

Pat, the best exit is the one for Albion/Almo in Idaho. You can also take the old highway 30 in Utah but that road is gravel most of the way and very rough. I%26#39;d plan several hours or even an overnight stay if you have that much time. There is lodging in both Almo and Albion. The road from the exit in Idaho is usually paved all the way, but there%26#39;s been some construction on it and I don%26#39;t know if it%26#39;s finished yet. As for walks/hikes, we just get out and walk around. I%26#39;m not sure about formal trails. But watch for snakes!

We like to go to City of Rocks and watch the rock climbers. It%26#39;s best to go in the morning or evening, can be hot during the day, especially in July.

Have a great trip!

Pug

City of Rocks National Reserve

Thank you Pug. Great info. No driving on unpaved roads on this trip.

You%26#39;ll be on gravel roads in the reserve itself, but there%26#39;s blacktop all the way to Almo.

Hmm, maybe I%26#39;ll make a trip out there this weekend! :)

Pug

That%26#39;s what I want to know. I%26#39;m just wondering because of a noon heat if I can walk/hike July 2nd since I%26#39;ll get there between 11-12. If not I can do what you do, just get out and walk around before is too hot. Thank you Pug, you are very helpful with last details of my trip

drive from Seattle to Calgary to Jackson Hole to Seattle

You have got one fantastic trip outlined! It is rare that people can devote so much time to each area. The only place where you might be shortchanging things is in the Seattle/western Washington area. Not only is Seattle a wonderful city with much to see, there are some incredible national parks closeby, including Mt. Rainier, Olympic and the North Cascades, as well as Mt. St. Helens. You might want to consider some of that on your trip back from Yellowstone to Seattle. But to answer your question of activities specific to young children, I suggest the following:

Day 45 - Yellowstone to Stanley, Idaho. Take Highway 20 south to Rexburg for kids to see bears up close and personal at Bear World. At Idaho Falls drive west on Hwy 20 to Craters of the Moon, where they can explore lava tubes and cinder cones. Overnight at Redfish Lake or in nearby Stanley, Idaho

http://www.yellowstonebearworld.com/

http://www.nps.gov/crmo/

http://www.redfishlake.com/

Day 46 - spend the day at Redfish Lake. The kids can swim and play on the beach, horseback or paddle boat rides, or hike on the many alpine trails

Day 47 - Stanley to Pendleton, WA, via Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway and Boise, Idaho

Day 48 - Pendleton via the Dalles on I-84 to WA-14. See Mt. St. Helen%26#39;s volcano and overnight near Mt. Rainier National Park perhaps at Longmire or in the park

Day 49 - 2 hour drive to Seattle.

drive from Seattle to Calgary to Jackson Hole to Seattle

To go from YNP to Seattle I%26#39;d recommend travel from West Yellowstone and hook up with I-90 (or go out the north enterance depending on where you stay). We just got home and stopped in Kellogg, ID on the way. They have a new indoor water park that just opened that your kids might enjoy. They have very nice suotes and the water park is included.

Hi - getting married in december in mexico and looking for a snowy honeymoon. would sun valley be a good place? i am just starting research and would love any help you can offer. we both want to ski, be social and generally enjoy a new place. any suggestions of places to stay would be good also, we love room service! thanks!

    honeymoon?

sun valley would be a lovely snowy place to honeymoon. quite romantic. look at the sun valley lodge, very romantic and room service. the view from your room is of the mountain and the famous ice skating rink. let me know. enjoy

    honeymoon?

Thanks for the info. This forum is a quiet one and I appreciate the feedback! do you you happen to know if the mountain is usually open in early - mid december?

This forum is always quiet...i am amazed, as i can not think of a more wonderful place to live. We are all so friendly, my friends from the East are amazed at how many people, look you in the eyes, and say, %26#39;Hello';...The mountain is always open the weekend before Thanksgiving. We have absoultly the best snowmaking in the world. And if the HEAVENS are looking out for us...real snow from the sky....enjoy

    Hi

Sun Valley would be a great place for honeymoon

It is so nostaglic it was the first destination ski resort in north america. It was the spot for hollywood movie stars in the 30%26#39;s and still is.

you never know who you might be skiing with or shareing mountain. but nobody makes a big deal about they are just people like you and me. that s the Idaho way.

check out some of the old movies made in the 40%26#39;s in sun valley like Sun Valley Seranade

they used to play sun valley serenade for free each night at the movie theater in sv...i cook for the .....in sv and really they are everywhere and no one blinks (well, maybe when i was around sting..pant, pant) an eye. that is why the famous love the valley, amongst other things.

Thanks for the info, SV sounds like it will work nicely. Given where I live (LA) and work (a movie studio) I am not too starstruck, so it should work nicely! Have a great weekend!

I am getting married in February and we are looking to go skiing in Idaho for a honeymoon. I%26#39;ve heard the runs at Sun Valley are breath-taking, but slow a long. Is this true? Is there another ski resort in Idaho with steeper runs? Is there still good snowfall in February? Do you have anymore sugguestions on places to stay or things to do that would be ';honeymoonesque'; thank you!

    HI

Gladys I am sure you will find as much steep and deep as you want.

Unless you are an expert some of the blue or even green runs scare the hell out of flatlanders LOL.

Plus there is always helli skiing if you want extreme

i have lived here for 30 years and constantly hear people say that this mountain is tooooo steep. I am not sure if you are talking about Sun Valley, maybe the small ski hill, but not our big one..no way. I could give a scare or 2 to you!!! and great snow in Feb.

    Dog Track?

Just wondering if there is still a open dog track in the Coeur d%26#39;Alene area. I thought there was one in the Post Falls area. I can%26#39;t see, to find any current information online about it.

Just wondering when they are open?

    Thanks

    Dog Track?

The track your thinking of is in Post Falls, just about 10 minutes from Coeur d%26#39;Alene right before you enter Spokane.

Here%26#39;s a link to their website

    http://www.gpeventcenter.com/

    Dog Track?

    Thanks.

Any ideas when its open for racing? I called the phone number a just got a generic voicemail.

I looked at their website a little and they didn%26#39;t say which days are open for off-track wagering. They have a calendar ';coming soon';.

To the best of my knowledge, they don%26#39;t actually run races there anymore -- just off-track dog and horse races from around the country.

You can try emailing them at

    SimulCast@GPEventCenter.com

They don%26#39;t actually do anymore dog racing there, I%26#39;ve had to call them before for other visitors. They are used primarily as an event center now, but they usually have stuff going on in the summer.

  • Traveling through Idaho Falls on the way to Yellowstone...

I am looking for a scenic spot to have lunch with my family. We have three young kids, so if there is a family friendly restaurant somewhere on the water that is ideal for us. Anybody have an idea where we can stop, eat and enjoy the view? Thank you!!

Traveling through Idaho Falls on the way to Yellowstone...

    Hi sagtravelgal,

Our favorite place downtown on ';The Falls'; is the Brownstone Restaurant. If you%26#39;re here in the summer, you can sit outside and enjoy the view; and the greenbelt is right in front of you to go feed the geese if you%26#39;re of a mind. Take exit 118 off the freeway (Broadway street), head east about 5 blocks and take a left just before you cross the river - can%26#39;t miss it.

    Enjoy your trip!

Traveling through Idaho Falls on the way to Yellowstone...

    Thank You! Sounds perfect!

    Breakfast in Twin Falls

    Hi everyone,

I was wondering if you could tell me if there is a scenic location for breakfast in Twin Falls. Is there someplace to eat breakfast on the water or looking at it? Thank you!

    Breakfast in Twin Falls

Sagtravelgal, only on Sunday mornings right now. Canyon Crest Event Center, right on the canyon rim, has a Sunday brunch but otherwise is not open for breakfast.

For breakfast without a view, try the Buffalo Cafe at 218 4th Avenue West -- a local favorite, not fancy but plenty of good food! Also Idaho Joe%26#39;s at 598 Blue Lakes Blvd. North. We also have chains such as Perkins, Shari%26#39;s and IHOP.

    Pug

    Breakfast in Twin Falls

For the best food, you have to go to the Buffalo! No view, as mentioned, but absolutely the best homemade everything.

Thank you so much for both of your replies! We will try it out. Thanks!

Be sure you Mapquest or Google the address before you go because it%26#39;s not on the ';main drag'; and is easy to miss if you%26#39;re not really looking for it. The streets in downtown Twin Falls can be a little confusing. Have a great trip.

Getting from Salt Lake to Idaho Falls

    Hello

I am looking to see if anyone knows of any private transfer companies that would pick us up at Salt Lake Airport and drive us to Idaho Falls.

I know about the Salt Lake Express bus service that is still an option but thinking it would be quicker if there was a private company that operate.

We don%26#39;t want to hire a car as we will have been traveling for nearly 24hrs by the time we get to Idaho.

I have also posted on the Salt Lake forum see if anyone on there could help.

    Thanks

    Joanne

Getting from Salt Lake to Idaho Falls

We%26#39;ve always used the Salt Lake Express bus (formerly S.L.A.S.H.) and have never had any problems. I don%26#39;t know of any other private companies operating from SLC to Idaho Falls.

Getting from Salt Lake to Idaho Falls

    Hello

Someone of the Salt Lake forum found this company they offer the private transfer at $60 per hour for 7 hours.

Does anyone know of any similar companies in Idaho Falls or nearby that might be able to help as they could be cheaper.

Any more help would be great

    Thanks

    Hello Johannes27,

I actually did come across a private transport company in Idaho Falls that will do a SLC airport run. It%26#39;s Idaho Transportation Company, and the email is slava32@aol.com and the phone number is 208-223-7720.

    Have a great trip!

    Hello

Thanks for the info on the last post for that company got a quote from them but it was about $400.

I have found a company through the Salt Lake Airport website that will take us from SLC to Idaho Falls for $70 each. Have posted the web link for the company below.

If anyone has heard or used these before would be grateful for an option before I go ahead and book with them.

we are planning a camping trip this summer up in that area. I am thinking two days at the park. One day for rides the other for the water park. Should we do one or two days? Is there any were to get discounted tickets or coupons? Any other suggestion for the area. We are camping at round lake for 58 days. One last question is the park really busy mid-week. I firgured it would be less busier midweek then weekends. Thanks again

    silerwood and info

Hi, unless you find a great deal on a two day pass I would only spend one day at Silverwood, go early, leave for lunch, don%26#39;t eat in the park, eat in Athol or pack a picnic then come back after lunch and stay late. It will most likely be less busy midweek then weekends, I would check the weather forecast and go on the warmest day midweek in order to enjoy the waterslides and remember your sunblock, apply often!

    silerwood and info

    thanks for the info

We were there last summer. I believe our 2 day passes were $55 per adult (teenagers pay adult price). We found discounted tickets at the Costco in CDA afterwards :( But I believe they were only $5 or so cheaper. We had a great time for two days. You can easily spend a whole day in the water park, if your family enjoys water.

If you are going to be camping, I would strongly suggest you look into Farragut State Park. It%26#39;s about 7 miles from Silverwood - east of Athol - and is really beautiful. I have some pictures on my website from our trip, if you want to have a look.

    members.virtualtourist.com/m/adecc/bd5bf/

There is also camping onsite at Silverwood, with the advantage being you don%26#39;t have to worry about driving or parking. But the campground is not very large and books up quickly.

It%26#39;s not terribly crowded during the week, but you%26#39;ll want to be there about half an hour before opening time in order to park and get into the park without wasting a lot of time.

We ate in the park and enjoyed the food and didn%26#39;t find it too expensive, in comparison to some other tourist places.

Oh, I just re-read your post and see that you have your camping lined up already. I am still going to leave the camping info in my reply, as it may be useful to others planning a camping trip to the area.

Something else you might be interested in doing is making a drive to Wallace. It is about an hour%26#39;s drive east of CDA. Wallace is a historic town and is a great way to spend an afternoon without spending a ton of money.

    campinggirl,

Thanks for the reply. We turned down sliverwoods campground and were you stayied because the id state park lady said roundlake was the place to be. I guess round lake is close to sandpoint, so not far from sliverwood. She said to visit farragut and stay at round due to less rv%26#39;s and fewer poeple. It sounds like a great campground as well. I enjoyied your pictures, thanks for sharing. We will have to check out wallace. We arrive on a sunday and leave Friday. I firgue that%26#39;s time for the park and to explore the area. Any more tips would be great. Thanks again to you and fun mom

Just reading your request. We are planning to head to Silverwoods July 3rd - we have been there in Aug 2006 and did have a good time. My husband heard on KHQ6 news they have discount tickets at Burger King. You may want to check it out - let me know as I have yet to find any info via internet. We are from Alberta and unsure if it is only available for US citizens. Any other questions just email.

    lakeside hotel in Coeur d'Alene

About 15years ago we stayed at a lovely hotel on the lake....I think it was a Best Western. It had it%26#39;s own little marina, very nice spot. I can%26#39;t seem to find it anywhere now and wondered if it had changed names or is just no longer there. Thanks

    lakeside hotel in Coeur d'Alene

You might be thinking of the Best Western Edgewater Resort in Sandpoint, Idaho, they do have lake front views. The only hotel on Lake Coeur d%26#39;Alene, in Coeur d%26#39;Alene, with a marina is the resort. The Red Lion in Post Falls, also has a Marina on the Spokane River.

    lakeside hotel in Coeur d'Alene

    Idaho retreat

Not sure what area to look first. Looking for serenity and beauty at a lodge/hotel nestled in a valley at the foot of the mountains where I can sit on a porch gazing out at a meadow with my morning cup of coffee and relax in the evening listening to the sounds of the night. Would be flying in and renting a car so not more than an hour or two drive.

    Idaho retreat

Idaho is a big state so you have a variety of choices, if you are looking for a quiet retreat in North Idaho, I would look at the Priest Lake area. Priest Lake is a very large lake, surrounded by forested mountains. Nearest airport with airline service is Spokane, Washington, about a 2 hour drive by interstate and highway from Priest Lake. Two resorts worth considering are Hill%26#39;s (www.hillsresort.com) or Elkins (www.elkinsresort.com). An overview of the Priest Lake area can be found at www.priestlake.org

    Idaho retreat

I got to thinking about this, and if it%26#39;s anything like the Baja/Cabo forum, people don%26#39;t usually look at the broad choice, but rather, zero in on the particular place they are thinking about. So, there probably aren%26#39;t a lot of people that actually go directly to Idaho, but rather to the city choice.

No, it%26#39;s nothing like the Baja forum... I think Teaner is safe looking at ';Idaho.'; You might check out Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch south of Stanley. Very close to Redfish Lake, at the foot of the Sawtooth Mountains, porches and meadows. And it%26#39;s only a couple hours from Boise.

Planning Ski vacation to Sun Valley late Feb. 09, Need info.

We usually drive from Wisconsin to Colorado the 3rd. or 4th. week of February. We are considering Sun Valley (driving). We have never been there. Our style is to go skiing and then usually hybernate in a condo, but we have stayed in hotels. We have a teenage girl, so we don%26#39;t do the bar scene, and we eat in moderately priced restaurants (or cook in condo).

Sounds like we could stay in the ';Village'; or Ketchum. Would like to know pros %26amp; cons of each.

Sounds like Sun Valley is a historic resort, did most people stay in the village? Are there shuttle buses to the hills from the village or Ketchum? How far is Ketchum from the ski slopes?

Last trip to Durango Colorado, we stayed in a Residence Inn that offered condo style accomodations with the flexibility of a hotel (we weren%26#39;t ';locked in'; for a specific lenght of time, and ended up checking out a day early without penalty).

Since there are only 3 of us, all we need is a 1 bedroom condo, but we can make a single hotel room work, too.

As you can tell, I need lost of advice, including winter route driving info. Any and all advice would be appreciated!!!

Planning Ski vacation to Sun Valley late Feb. 09, Need info.

Nick, I%26#39;m going to let Charley answer the bulk of your questions, but I just want to encourage you to try Sun Valley. In the winter the best route is probably I-80 and turn north at Twin Falls on Highway 93. There%26#39;s a convenient shuttle, plenty of different kinds of lodging to choose from, and a lot of great shopping. If they are having the sleigh rides when you%26#39;re here, I%26#39;d recommend that for one night. I like staying in a condo, because my sweetie cooks!

Have a great trip, whatever you decide.

    Pug

Planning Ski vacation to Sun Valley late Feb. 09, Need info.

First of all, the ';village'; that you are refering to i think is the town of KEtchum? They are 1 mile apart and they have a bike trail between them, meaning in the dead of winter, easy walking. The busses run all over town, easy on and off anywhere.

I would google condos in Sun Valley area, they will bring up Ketchum, and try them. If you get one in SV, you will have use of the hot pools, ect. Just check them out. The ski hill is just at the base of the mountain, on time to get there. I just thought, try Penneys Lodge (can%26#39;t remember the exact name, but it will come up) and that is right at the base. He takes you over the short walk with his snowmobile. you feel special...

There are no pros or cons on where to stay. It is easy to get around from both. I would just see what is available, and decide. If you find out about any, PM me and i will check them out...enjoy

  • Cougar Mountain Lodge-is it still there?

I am seeking some nostalgic information.

When I was a kid in the early 1970%26#39;s, we visited an uncle in Nampa. He took us to a family cabin in McCall for a couple of days.

I can still remember the beautiful drive and stopping to eat at a place along the Payette River (I think) called Cougar Mountain Lodge. In my memory, I had a fantastic meal there.

I am wondering if that place is still in business.

Thanks to anyone who can provide information.

(Last month, we visited Yellowstone. I wish we could have had the time to visit Idaho. We drove across the state line near West Yellowstone to take a picture of my kids by the ';Welcome to Idaho'; sign. We plan to frame it and give it to my mom, who is a proud native of your beautiful state.)

    Most Beautiful Area

Where would be the most beautiful area in Southern

Idaho to spend a summer vacation?

    Most Beautiful Area

    Oooooh...

That%26#39;s a tough one. I shouldn%26#39;t logically consider Redfish Lake and the Sawtooths in the background as Southern Idaho (much more Central), but it%26#39;s THE place in the region as far as I%26#39;m concerned.

Some might argue for Driggs and Victor, on the backside of the Tetons (about due east of Idaho Falls). That%26#39;s clearly ';Eastern Idaho'; FWIW.

The drive I want to try, that I%26#39;ve heard about from an ex of the ex, concerns Bear Lake in far Southeastern Idaho (and into Utah). Perhaps someone else knows something about this area.

    Most Beautiful Area

I%26#39;ve been to all three mentioned. Bear Lake is beautiful, but it doesn%26#39;t have the unlimited hiking and numerous lakes that are in the Sawtooths. Driggs/Victor/Swan Lake can all be done as part of a Yellowstone/Grand Teton trip. My top choice in all of Idaho would be the Sawtooth Mountains (granted, it is CENTRAL Idaho, not south).

Free Wi-Fi near The Grove Hotel

I%26#39;m staying at the Grove Hotel for a couple of days and was interested in finding a coffee shop or some other place nearby that would offer free wi-fi so I can stay in touch with my friends without having to pay The Grove%26#39;s daily internet service charge. Any suggestions?

    Hi

boise is very wifi friendly you should have no problem finding free wifi.the airport has free wifi.

I think you can get free wifi in the grove park right outside of hotel if not then most coffe shops downtown have. right acroos the street from Grove is BoDo shopping I think tullys coffe shop has free wifi

Free Wi-Fi near The Grove Hotel

Thanks. I%26#39;ll give them a try. I figured there would be some options. Gosh, if there%26#39;s free wi-fi in the park just outside the hotel, I wonder if I could pick it up from my hotel room. Now, that would be funny.

also, try java, for free wifi and the best coffee drink.....a bowl of soul, you will never forget it!!

    Hi

    If you can change hotels

the Hampton Inn and suites has complimentary Wi-Fi

only 1 block south of Grove in BoDo but has better trip advisor rating. rated no 1 hotel in Boise.

it is a new hotel under 2 yrs old.

boise has some great resturants downtown many with outside patio%26#39;s all close to hotel

right across from the Grove hotel across the little grove park and fountain is the Brick Oven Bistro

one of my fav places to eat, sit on the patio have a beer and people watch. LOL they have the best strawberry shortcake in towm IMO.

Hotel is the conference hotel, so I%26#39;m locked in there, but I love the idea of the bistro and people watching in my free time. I also love strawberry shortcake. I%26#39;ll make it a point to stop by.

ok restaurants in boise...again, my favorite is the red feather. absoultly the best martini and the asiago calamari is to kill for..

    Music

I%26#39;m staying in an hotel on the River Parkway near W. Bradway St., Idaho Falls at end of July for a few days.

Are there any good/ pleasant bars/ clubs nearby that have live music mid week (Country and Western/ Blues/ Jazz/ etc.)? If not live then just pleasant atmosphere?

    Thanks

    Music

    Hi Motoguzzibob,

Yes, you have a couple of options for live music in Idaho Falls in July. Every Wednesday evening there is an ';Alive After Five'; concert on ';A'; Street on the other side of the river from your hotel (minute walk). Live band, food, beer/wine, etc...

Also, on (I think) Thursday through Saturday nights there is a band at Vino Rosso (also on ';A'; street, right where they close off the street for Alive After Five across from the Colonial Theater). Typical wine bar, serve hors d%26#39;ouevres and light snacks.

I hope you enjoy your stay in Idaho Falls.

    Winter in Ketchum with Kids....

Pennay%26#39;s is a great location-within walking distance of the mountain and town. Also, the local bus is free so that%26#39;s a great way to get around without a car.

Try looking up the Sun Valley Express, a shuttle that has run between Boise and Sun Valley in previous years.

I%26#39;d also recommend Johnny G%26#39;s Subshack for hot subs for a quick lunch, the Kneadery for a hearty breakfast before getting on the mountain, and Rico%26#39;s for pizza/pasta/salads. If you%26#39;re thinking of going out for New Year%26#39;s Eve, definatley make reservations ahead of time-things fill up quickly. Have a great time!

  • Things to do, places to eat, June 2008

We are staying in a vacation home in Island Park 3 nights in mid June this summer and there is very little info out there that looks current about where to eat, things to do, etc. while staying there. Is there anyone who can give some updated info for me on good restaurants and anything to do with kids 9 and 11? I understand there might be tubing at Macks Inn and lots of fly fishing ops. Is there anywhere you can rent a pole and just try fly fishing without going to the time ad expense of renting a guide and doing the whole fly fishing day thing? How about renting boats or canoes on any of the nearby lakes? My boys like to try new things but typically are done and on to something else in a hour tops!

    Thanks!!

Things to do, places to eat, June 2008

anyone? I swear it is virtaully impossible to get any current information on Island Park! I%26#39;m starting to wonder what I%26#39;ve goten myself into!!!

Things to do, places to eat, June 2008

snorkelgirlie: Island Park is not exactly a mecca for restaurants. I%26#39;ve been through it a number of times traveling between home (Twin Falls) and Yellowstone, and I%26#39;ve NEVER eaten a meal there. What I HAVE done is to check out the sand dunes near St. Anthony (40 miles south) and drive the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway near Ashton (10 miles south). There%26#39;s a great boardwalk that goes right on top of the Falls. Near Ashton you can also drive into the remote southwestern entrance of Yellowstone. Very few tourists there. The road ends at Cave Falls and is often a good place to see wildlife. There%26#39;s lots of fishing at the lakes around Macks%26#39; Inn and Island Park, and although I don%26#39;t have personal experience with it, I would think you could find a place to rent equipment. Then again, this is Idaho...it doesn%26#39;t cater to tourists the way many other states do...

now i am curious, how did you pick island park??maybe family near there???

We will be finishing up a 2+ week vacation there and the thinking was to have a space to ';chill'; away from the crowds. We got a beautiful vacation home with a hot tub on the deck. After all the moving around a lot prior to that, I just thought it would be a quiet place to relax and chill. I still feel that way, but maybe stocking up on groceries in West before heading out to Island Park is a good idea! By then we%26#39;ll probably be tired of restaurant food anyway!

We%26#39;ll cover the west side of the park from here, it%26#39;s only a 1/2 hour drive to the gate. If I had it to do over now, I probably would have stayed closer, but I think we will also welcome the solitude after a long trip with lots of moving about. I hope so!

Hey cdudley, you missed an opportunity for some good food. Granted, it%26#39;s nothing that comes served in a paper wrapper with a side of fries!!

Island Park is beautiful, and on the way from Idaho Falls to Island Park, you simply must take the Mesa Falls loop. It%26#39;s really spectacular.

Your best plan for planning is to go to www.yellowstoneteton.com and sign up for their monthly newsletter. That way, you%26#39;ll know just what is going on before you get there.

Take a warm jacket and maybe some gloves for morning. You%26#39;ll be in the high country and it can get nippy. Maybe something fleecy too.

Full disclosure, I%26#39;m with the state tourism office. But I really like the area and I hope you will too.

    Cathy

Can you elaborate on restaurants in Island park or the drive from there to West Yellowstone, Cathy?

I was just in Island Park the other day and Angler%26#39;s Lodge has a really good restaurant. Tell Dave Eby Hi. I made note that there are a couple other restaurants and a Subway near Sawtelle Mountain Resort. I can%26#39;t remember the names of the other restaurants, just that they were there. For 9 and 11 year olds I would recommend renting a couple ATVs. Since Island Park is such a snowmobile mecca, it becomes a great ATV route in the summer with miles and miles of routes. There was a whole group I saw with helmets, just riding. Nothing extreme, just cruising the trails. If not old enough I%26#39;m sure there are bicycle rentals for all those trails. West Yellowstone 22 miles away has the Imax theater as well as the Grizzly and Wolf Center if your boys get done with nature. Big Springs is a good place to see and hike to Johnny Sacks cabin.

  • Spokane to Kailspell

We are flying in to Spokane on our way to Kalispell, MT. Our flight gets in at 6:30 on Aug 30. We need to be in Kalispell on Aug. 31 in plenty of time to link up with another couple. Where is a good place to stay the night on Sat? I am concerned about hotels since it is Labor Day weekend.

    TIA,

    Tere

    Spokane to Kailspell

I would suggest Sandpoint, Idaho if you are going to take the northern scenic route to Kalispell. Getting to Sandpoint will get you past the traffic of the Spokane - Coeur d%26#39; Alene - Sandpoint corridor allowing for an easy drive on Aug 31, traffic particularly between Coeur %26#39;d Alene and Sandpoint can be slow. Nortmally about a 2 - 2.5 hour drive from the Spokane airport to Sandpoint, you should make reservations in Sandpoint ASAP. If you take the southern Interstate 90 route you may want to consider Missoula, Montana, about a 4 hour drive and you lose a hour due to time zone change from Pacific to Mountain Time (northern Idaho is on Pacific Time, Montana is on Mountain Time).

    Spokane to Kailspell

    Thank you for your suggestions.

    Tere

Howdy - Just reading CDA posts (we live in CDA) and saw this one. If you do go the I-90 route, you%26#39;ll actually get off I-90 BEFORE you get to Missoula. You%26#39;ll exit at St. Regis, then head through Plains. I think it ends up being Hwy 135 to Hwy 28 to Hwy 93. We do this drive every winter to Whitefish. It%26#39;s only about 3 1/2 hours from CDA and fun driving. (i.e. not lots of traffic, nice relaxing drive).

So, I would say stay in Coeur d%26#39;Alene or even in Kellogg, ID if hotels are scarce in CDA and then drive just a little over 3 hours from CDA/Kellogg to Kalispell. OR, it%26#39;s a very doable drive from Spokane and only adds another 30 minutes or so.

I have NOT done the North route through Sandpoint, but I%26#39;m sure that%26#39;s pretty too. I think staying in Sandpoint would be more expensive and possibly more difficult to find vacancies though.

    Accomadations help

    Hello,

My husband, myself and our four year old are planning to stay near Coeur d%26#39;Alene in September.

Instead of staying in a hotel, we are looking for either a vacation home or kitchenette style cabin. The only ones I%26#39;m able to find are $300-$400/night. Thats a bit rich for our budget. Does anyone know of any reasonablely priced accomadations for us. We%26#39;d like to stay fairly close to Coeur d%26#39;Alene.

    Thanks

I can%26#39;t offer any specific recommendations, but hopefully others will come along and add something.

Just in case you haven%26#39;t found these sites, here are a few that offer vacation cabins/condos/resorts in the area. I looked through briefly and there are definitely some choices much cheaper than what you%26#39;re finding.

    Accomadations help

You might want to consider the cabins at the two Idaho State Parks near Coeur d%26#39; Alene. Heyburn State Park is located about 40 miles south of Coeur d%26#39; Alene and Farragut is located about 30 miles north of Coeur d%26#39; Alene. Both are very nice State Parks with access to lakes. The cabins vary with Farragut having cabins with minimal facilites and Heyburn having a variety of cottages/cabins. Web Site is: www.parksandrecreation.idaho.gov

I know the hotels the best, but I know that Hayden Hideaway has cabin/condo, kind of rentals, not sure what the price is. They can be reached at 208-762-7715. Hopefully this helps a little.

    You can also check craigslist.org

You might consider the Flamingo Hotel in downtown Coeur d%26#39;Alene. It%26#39;s a clean, budget motel that has some large family units. I just checked their site and there is only one unit listed with a kitchen, but there MIGHT be other with kitchenettes. The rate for the kitchen room is $160 per night. Before we moved to Coeur d%26#39;Alene, and were making many trips over to scout the area, this was our ';motel of choice'; with our young son because it was reasonably priced, close to everything, and clean %26amp; quaint.

    Coeur d'Alene to West Glacier

Next month we%26#39;ll be driving from CdA to West Glacier and back again. Can someone please offer route suggestions? Are there two good routes so that we can see something different on the return?

    Thanks!

    Coeur d'Alene to West Glacier

consider I-90 to st. regis, north to 200, east to 93, then 93 up through St. Ignatious and into kalispel. For the return, consider west out of Kalispel and through libby, bonner ferry snadpoint and back to cd%26#39;a.

    Coeur d'Alene to West Glacier

Thanks, k2kelly. I%26#39;ve since read some of your other posts. They were very helpful to me too. I appreciate your input here -- I%26#39;ll use it as my guide.

I would have suggested the same thing, so I think its covered. Make sure to have fun in Glacier.

    Salmon River Lodge

It appears to me that there are two Salmon River Lodges. One is located in Stanley and the other is at a place called Corn Creek. Can anyone verify this? If this is correct, it appears that the second one claims to be 70 miles from the nearest community. Does anyone have any experience with the second one at Corn Creek? That is was it a nice place to stay, how was the food, scenery, activities (especially for kids)? Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

    Salmon River Lodge

Though I am not familiar with this particular lodge, I can tell you that there are a handful of lodges in the Idaho wilderness, and they are indeed at least 70 miles away from civilization. Idaho has more wilderness than any state except for Alaska, and the mid-section of the state is virtually roadless. If you want to get away from people, a back country lodge in Idaho is a good way to go.

  • English man visiting Idaho Falls late July

    Hi,

I%26#39;m doing a small driving tour in the USA and arriving in Idaho Falls from Yellowstone/ Grand Teton late July. I have booked a few nights, but could ectend my stay by a few more days before going off to Salt Lake City. I haven%26#39;t booked a hotel in Salt Lake City and wondered if you thought my time would be better spent exploring Idaho Falls?

Have you any suggestions of what to do?

Incidently, I am an older single guy (recntly divorced)

English man visiting Idaho Falls late July

I frankly can%26#39;t think of much to do in Idaho Falls itself; however, if you can extend your visit by a couple days, I would go west from Idaho Falls to see Craters of the Moon, where the astronauts trained to walk on the moon because of its volcanic features, and then drive north to Ketchum/Sun Valley and the Sawtooth Mountains (Redfish Lake, Alturas Lake, Stanley Lake). After a night or two there, drive south through Twin Falls back to Salt Lake City.

English man visiting Idaho Falls late July

I second Cdudley%26#39;s suggestions. You%26#39;ll be visiting some of my favorite places!

    Pug

Thanks guys, had considered those ideas, good to know you recommend them. Thanks again for quich response.

Can I ask one more question, please?

Is Salt Lake City worth going to? I am going down to Monument Valley, etc. after.

    Another question:

    I%26#39;m staying in an hotel on the River Parkway near W. Bradway St., Idaho Falls%26gt;

Are there any good/ pleasant bars/ clubs nearby that have live music mid week (Country and Western/ Blues/ Jazz/ etc.)

    Once again, thanks

Yes, there%26#39;s a lot to see in Salt Lake City... Temple Square, Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons, some great restaurants and hotels. I like Little America, which is about 6 long blocks from downtown.

THank you once again for your helpful and quick response

Salt Lake City is beautiful, especially the grounds of the LDS Temple. You can tour several of the buildings on the grounds, though not the Temple itself (open only to members in good standing). You can even tour of one of Brigham Young%26#39;s houses. When we went there last time the guide played down the fact at Brigham had several houses and several wives. :)

I agree (again) with cdudley about Little America, and that there are many good restaurants in Salt Lake.

I can%26#39;t answer your question about Idaho Falls, so I hope that one of the locals can.

    Pug

Thank you yet again for your helpful and quick response. Looks like only 2 days in Idaho Falls and then on to Salt LAke City.

    Cheers guys!

Good idea. I was raised in the Idaho Falls area and we usually left IF and went to Salt Lake to enjoy some life. In other words, IF is a great place to live but pretty short on things to do. I would spend more time in SLC and less time in IF.

    Thanks again

Lodging in Eastern Idaho near Yellowstone

My husband, son, and I will be visiting Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons for a week. We would like to drive back up through Eastern Idaho on our way to Bozeman. We plan to see the South-East corner of Yellowstone and Mesa Falls. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to stay in that area of Eastern Idaho? Our son is 2 years old, so some B%26amp;Bs may not be for us. Thanks!

  • Guesthouse Inn

We will be staying there in a few weeks for 3 nights while we go to Silverwood and I am just wondering what to expect, the website didn%26#39;t have any pics. of the outside but I did see a little of what the rooms look like, I guess I just want to know if it is an o.k. place? Any opinions?

    Guesthouse Inn

Well... the reviews aren%26#39;t too good both on this site and others (google ';guesthouse inn coeur';) but it seems no worse than any of the other chain motels. I do know people who have stayed there (it%26#39;s been a few years) and they didn%26#39;t complain, so I think it%26#39;s just your basic motel.

The location is on a very busy street near the busiest intersection in Coeur d%26#39;Alene (appleway and Hwy 95). There are a lot of fast food restaurants in the immediate area and a few nice restaurants, too (like Tomato Street almost across the street).

If you%26#39;re booked there already, enjoy it and enjoy Silverwood. If you can change you might want to stay in one of the motels on Sherman ave. which is the main street in the cute little downtown area, close to the beach and the resort. There are some affordable motels there, but if you can%26#39;t change, don%26#39;t worry about it. I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll enjoy Guesthouse Inn -- just make sure you visit the downtown area and take a walk by the resort and beach. It%26#39;s beautiful in the summer.

    Have a wonderful trip.

    Guesthouse Inn

I know my hotels pretty well in town, the guesthouse is a typical economy brand hotel, you should expect no frills, but a clean room. I%26#39;ve met the new manager personally and she is working hard to change the poor reviews the guesthouse has received. She is working on redoing the interior right now. The exterior is a bit outdated and in need of some sprucing up which they will be working on in the future. I would say that all of the economy brand motels in town, guesthouse, super 8, motel 6, and days, are all equal. If you want an upgrade to a midscale hotel you would have to pay more for them.

I agree with Kirk and Mimi the Coeur d%26#39;Alene destination expert, the Flamingo and Resort City Inn on Sherman are really nice too, and should be economical as well because they are non-chain motels, and you definitely have to see downtown!

Silverwood is great don%26#39;t forget to try their huckleberry funnel cake if they%26#39;ve got it!

We stayed there one night a couple of years ago. We got their last room (there was some kind of high school tournament going on), and one of the previous guests had cut the cord to both the refrigerator and the microwave. The room was small, but it served our purpose well. It was $15 or $20 cheaper than the other nearby motels, and it was an easy walk to the Tomato Street. The breakfast area in the lobby is VERY small, but they did have a waffle maker. At that time, I thought it was a typical, budget chain motel. But the bed was comfortable, the room was clean, and the price was right.

    W. A. Robison

Thanks for all of your help, it%26#39;s been a few years since we have been to Idaho and the last trip we stayed in Post Falls so this time we thought staying in Coeur d%26#39;alene would be nice, I did check into a few other places before booking at the Guesthouse but they were either not available or the price was too high for us, we are paying $95 per night at Guesthouse for the 4 of us. Besides our visit to Silverwood we are looking forward to spending some time at the lake also and I will be sure and check out the downtown area..

Just one more question, Are there places in town to get discount tiks. to Silverwood?

good news spuddysmom3, I checked the silverwood web site and Guesthouse Inn is a Silverwood Lodging Partner, so they have discount tickets at the lodge. Here%26#39;s the link to that page

    …silverwoodthemepark.com/lodging-partners.php

I would take KirkandMimi%26#39;s advice on that, the only place they would be cheaper is at CostCo and only then by $1, which will be made up for by gas and time by buying them at the hotel.

Thanks, I will definately check with the hotel and see waht kind of deals on tickets they have.

I checked on craigslist for our area and there are quite a few tickets. But, of course, buyer beware! I know Silverwood gives tickets to kids for reading through the schools, so unfortunately, this may be the tickets on craigslist. They are kind of like Disney, not big discounts anywhere. Burger King used to advertise a dollar or two off. And then, there is Costco. I would recommend a season pass, depending on how many days you are going. We get a gold pass every year and it admits 3 for about $250.

I would really suggest continuing to search on the hotel. The Guesthouse is in a very busy, noisy location and rents rooms by the week/month, leading to a sometimes transient clientele. I know because we have a mentally ill relative who often stays there in between housing... The rooms are about the same as an older Super 8 or Motel 6. The lobby is dreary and the breakfast area is dismal. I would check into the Silverlake Motel. (also closer to Silverwood) Post Falls, while a few miles down the road, would have cheaper hotels.

I found tickets at Costco here in Tacoma for 30.99(one day) so I am going to get them there. Thanks for all of your help. btw., I am sticking with the Guesthouse because the only other places available are out of my price range, seems like maybe it is a busy time?

Yep, Summer in Coeur d%26#39;Alene, is a busy time, there%26#39;s always tons of actvities going on in the area.

    Campground recommendations?

My boyfriend and I (30-somethings) are planning a trip down to Sandpoint for the first week of September. Our goal is to find a good campground for the week where we can maybe get in a couple days of golf (we don%26#39;t mind a short drive), hiking, etc. and just some relaxing nights by the fire. We were originally immediately in the Sandpoint area, but are open. We are tenting though, so will require somewhere with showers and are hoping to be by the water.

All the sites I have found on the internet (dozens so far) don%26#39;t really give any info other than the basics. Can anyone make any recommendations?

    Thanks so much!

    Campground recommendations?

A little south of Sandpoint, at Athol, is Farragut State Park. We spent 4 nights there last summer, and were very impressed with the park and the facilities. There are lots of shower buildings and they were very clean.

Another popular spot (where I have never camped myself) is Round Lake. I understand from other Idaho natives that this is ';the'; place to camp in the Sandpoint area. You might want to try and locate a website and have a look.

I understand Idaho has been quite dry again this year. Can anyone advise if fires are allowed at the moment?

    Campground recommendations?

Agree that Faragut State Park is a great central location to both Sandpoint and Coeur d%26#39; Alene, and probably has the most to offer campers in terms of facilities. Our summer has been dry but it did rain on 7/22/08 which helped in terms of fire danger. Current fire dnager is at high, camp fires are allowed in official campground sites.

Contact the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce. Call or visit their website. They can give you recommendations of where to go, stay, play, etc.

Cute local hotel, Monarch Mountain Lodge is good, clean, affordable place to stay if you don%26#39;t camp.

    Boise Trolley Service/Tour Train

Has anyone ridden the Boise Trolley Service [aka Tour Train} lately? I have some relatives visiting in August and would like to take them on the train, but I%26#39;ve heard some bad things about it. I rode on it a few years ago and it was very fun, but it%26#39;s under new ownership. A review posted on another site said the train was dirty and the operator was rude and gave a boring presentation.

    Boise Trolley Service/Tour Train

if you are from boise, why not take a ';trial '; run on the train. I have been to boise a zillion times and never seen the train. where does it go?

    Boise Trolley Service/Tour Train

It%26#39;s not really a train. It%26#39;s those ';tour train'; cars on wheels. I usually see those near downtown, nowhere else.

Of course, I haven%26#39;t taken the ride, either.

I don%26#39;t live in Boise, I%26#39;m from Sun Valley so that%26#39;s why I haven%26#39;t taken a ';trial ride';. We%26#39;re meeting in Boise. Anyway, I%26#39;ve decided that my relatives and I will take a spin and see how everything works out. I%26#39;ll let you Boise residents know if it%26#39;s something worthwhile.

    Shopping ?

Hi as I posted in an earlier post we are coming for vacation that way in a week and I love to shop.....would I be better off shopping in Spokane or is there any good malls, outlet malls/stores in Iowa?

    Shopping ?

    Hi,

I%26#39;m pretty sure you mean Idaho, not Iowa. Common mistake....

Coeur d%26#39;Alene has one real ';mall';, the Silverlake Mall on Hwy 95. There are quite a few smaller ';centers'; with Target stores, Best Buy, Ross, etc. and most of these are on the main Hwy 95.

Post Falls, which is right next to Coeur d%26#39;Alene has the Post Falls Outlet mall, but I believe quite a few of the stores are vacant and not sure it would be worth a trip. I could be wrong.

The downtown area on Sherman Ave. in Coeur d%26#39;Alene has some really cute little shops depending on what type of shopping you want to do, but if you%26#39;re set on malls, you might have to travel to Spokane.

The Spokane Valley mall off of Sullivan Ave. is a good-sized mall and is about 15 minutes from Post Falls and the Idaho border. If you want a BIG mall, the Northtown Mall in North Spokane is huge, but a 45 minute drive.

Unless you%26#39;re dying to visit a big mall, I think your time would be better spent visiting the downtown CdA area and maybe Silverlake Mall and IF you have extra time, maybe the Valley Mall. The drive to the big Spokane Northtown Mall is ugly and long and not in a particularly ';holiday friendly'; area.

    Shopping ?

KirkandMimi covered it all except I would add that there is a Cabela%26#39;s store at the Idaho/Washington stateline area. Cabela%26#39;s is a very large outdoor sports store, it opened in the last year.

Thanks so much both of you and yes I did mean Idaho haha We are coming from Alberta and staying in Spokane a day or 2 before going to Coeur d%26#39;Alene and can%26#39;t wait to go to the casinos and shop woo hooo!

I think the Silverlake mall is depressing! I would gladly drive to the Valley Mall in Spokane or to the downtown River Park Square. It might help us give suggestions if you were to say what you would be shopping for....

I mostly agree with inHayden about the mall in Coeur d%26#39;Alene, the malls in Spokane are bigger and nicer.

I also agree with KirkandMimi about the stores on Sherman, tons of cool stuff. I%26#39;m a big kid at heart so my favorite store down there is FigPickles toy store.

Beautiful resort. My mom claims it was originally built as part of a movie set for an Alfred Hitchcock flick. On my mother%26#39;s advice, my fiancee and I checked out North by Northwest hoping to see the lodge...to no avail. Was my mother dreaming? If not, which movie was the original lodge in?

    Whitetail Club

This may be a little delayed..

The Whitetail Club was first called the Shore Lodge, here is a bit of history:

In 1938, Hollywood came to McCall. Northwest Passage was filmed on Payette Lake and the surrounding area. Robert Young, Spencer Tracy, and Walter Brennan stayed in the area during filming. The Forts were built using Brown Lumber. The current Girl Scout Camp had a ';fort'; and east of the Shore Lodge were stables built for the horses used in the film. About 900 people, many from the area, were paid $5. 00 a day to star as extras, or to help build sets.

I just ran across this post by accident and will add one thing. The movie itself was filmed at the far north end of Payette Lake. I miss Mccall!

Water Park near Yellowstone / Idaho?

I%26#39;m traveling next July to FINALLY see Yellowstone. We%26#39;re flying into Salt Lake and then driving. Any place that would be a fun active day (like a waterpark) to keep my 14 and 17 year old girls happy? A week of scenery will leave them cranky and not appreciating the beauty!!! Thanks!

Jeri, waterparks are few and far between in the wilderness here. :D I don%26#39;t know of any close to Yellowstone.

On your way out or on your way back, you might want to stop at Lagoon, which is an amusement park outside of Salt Lake City. Thank you Pug!!! Looks like exactly what I need.... even down to the show with Broadway tunes for my older daughter to enjoy after a day of waterslides and rides! Of course, I%26#39;ll be in the lazy river... and if I save it for the last day, it%26#39;ll keep them quiet until we get there! Thanks so much!

  • ATV Rental - Base in Island Park - go to St. Anthony?

Would we have more fun riding the dunes in St. Anthony?

Any specific recommendations are appreciated also.

ATV Rental - Base in Island Park - go to St. Anthony?

It%26#39;s hard to guess what you%26#39;d like since we don%26#39;t know your personality. I personally liked the sand dunes near St. Anthony. They are big and diverse and just fun to ride around in an off-road vehicle. But they are just that, sand dunes. There is no fancy park or many amenities there, just sand dunes.

    Where to eat in Wallace

The Jameson has ok food, service is not good - the 1313 has much better food and also a great atmosphere and friendly people.

    Where to eat in Wallace

We really like the restruant inside The Brooks Hotel. They have great food. Always hot %26amp; delicious. We%26#39;ve ate there lots of times. Also on main street there is a really good pizza joint. All the other restruants in Wallace are TERRIBLE!

    Where to eat in Wallace

We never ate in Wallace - we were there on a Monday, and many of the restaurants were closed! I found this odd, for a tourist town.

We did, however, stop in at the 1313 for a drink, and I have to agree with rangegirl that the service and atmosphere were great there.

Itinerary for Coeur d' Alenes area including biking.

The first of September my husband and I are flying into Seattle for a 2 week trip to explore Washington, Idaho and Oregon. The first 2 days and nights will be spent in Seattle and that is all I have planned so far! After Seattle we will rent a car and head towards the Coeur d’Alene area. We want to rent bikes and ride the Hiawatha Trail and are open to day bike rides also on the Trail of the Coeur d’ Alenes etc. We are not mountain bikers, but rather leisurely bikers usually riding 30-40 miles a day, preferably on terrains that are not drastic inclines. I would love to find a B%26amp;B and/or Inn to set up as a base camp while we are in the area. Any suggestions on what would be a nice area and place to stay? What would be a good 4 day itinerary for this area that would include biking and other natural beauties?

Once we leave this area we plan to drive along and explore the Columbia River Gorge, as we head back towards Seattle for our flight back home. I am also looking for suggestions on this part of our trip.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Itinerary for Coeur d' Alenes area including biking.

This is noidahodave%26#39;s (the other ';destination expert';) expertise -- I know he loves biking the trails and knows more about North Idaho than anyone, so I%26#39;ll make sure he sees this and responds as soon as he can.

    Sounds like a wonderful trip.

Itinerary for Coeur d' Alenes area including biking.

I would say if you like flat and leisure to try out centennial trail headed East around Lake Coeur d%26#39;Alene, it%26#39;s a beautiful trip.

There are a lot of really cool bed and breakfasts in Coeur d%26#39;Alene, they just had their semi-annual tour not too long ago and I was able to see most of them, and they are all pretty nice the website for the B%26amp;B Association is http://www.bb-northidaho.com/

I haven%26#39;t had a chance to make it to Columbia Gorge yet so hopefully someone else can come along and give you advice on that.

Can%26#39;t add much on the B%26amp;B%26#39;s in the Coeur d%26#39; Alene area but here are my thoughts on bike trips.

My preference in order is Hiawatha, Trail of Coeur d%26#39; Alenes, and the Centennial Trail. Hiawatha is hard to beat, a very unique experience with the tunnels, trestles and mountain scenery, its an abandoned railroad so its a moderate grade and if you use the shuttle bus its all downhill. Lookout Ski Area is the summer manager and has a good web site with info (www.skilookout.com). You buy tickets, shuttle bus passes and rent bikes at the ski area located at Lookout Pass on Interstate 90 at the Idaho/Montana border. The Hiawatha actually starts in Montana, you exit the freeway several miles into Montana and travel on a very good gravel road to the parking area and beginning of the trail. Couple of tips for riding the Hiawatha: 1. Lookout Pass rents fully equipped bikes including the lights needed to go through the tunnel 2) bring a long sleeve shirt or light jacket because the tunnels can be cool and wet 3) start as early as possible to avoid crowds at parking lot and shuttle bus, Lookout ski area opens at 8AM 4) allow a full day to do the ride. Lookout Ski Area and the Hiawatha are about a 45 minute to 1 hour drive from Coeur d%26#39; Alene, its a great ride, my 80 year old father has done three times and is ready to go back. Trail of the Coeur d%26#39; Alene%26#39;s offers more of a river / lake ride. Currently the section from Bull Run Lake to Harrison is under repair but may be finished by September. My favorite two sections are from Enaville to Bull Run Lake along the Coeur d%26#39; Alene River, and the section from Harrison to Plummer along the lake and up Plummer Creek Canyon. The trail is paved, mostly flat except the section up Plummer Creek Canyon which isn%26#39;t too bad due to being an old railroad. Plummer is about a 45 minute drive south of Coeur d%26#39; Alene, Enaville is about a 30 minute drive east of Coeur d%26#39; Alene. These two sections require at least a half day to do. Lastly the Centennial Trail has two nice sections one along Lake Coeur d%26#39; Alene from the city of Coeur d%26#39; Alene and another from the city of Post Falls towards Spokane along the Spokane River.

Thank you for the feedback. It is all very helpful.

If you need a place to stay during your return drive along the Columbia River, look into the Columbia Gorge Hotel. You would not expect to find a little gem like this in that area.

It can break up an otherwise long drive back to Seattle. There are some beautiful waterfalls in the area. And the ';World Famous Farm Breakfast'; alone is worth the stay!

It is a little costly, but will be memorable!

I hope that you will be exploring the historic Columbia Gorge highway as well! This is an incredibly scenic drive, and it took us the better part of a day to travel from The Dalles to Portland via this highway. We *really* took our time, but we just couldn%26#39;t get enough of the scenery! (In our own defence, we did spend about 2 hours touring the Bonneville Dam!)

Don%26#39;t know much about the biking, or the bed and breakfasts... but, I would definitely second the Columbia River Gorge hotel stop. Hood River would be a nice stop for lunch as well.

When you leave Seattle, the drive from Seattle to about Wenatchee/Moses Lake is gorgeous, then it turns rather deserty and ho-hum. It turns back into beautiful forested land after Spokane. When you head back towards Portland along the Columbia River Gorge, the best part is from about John Day to Portland. There is a loop of ';old highway'; you can take which is very scenic. I would make sure you can do that during daylight hours.

If you have any time available for the Oregon Coast, Cannon Beach is definitely the best choice.

  • Jerry's Country Store and Cabins.. not good

We%26#39;re from the Boise area and decided to take the in-laws on the ';Sawtooth loop'; (Boise-Idaho City-Lowman-Stanley-Ketchum). We rented a couple of cabins at Jerry%26#39;s Country Store %26amp; Cabins. On the plus side, the location is great. The rive is so close you could probably cast a fishing line from the back porch and the view is magnificent.

The facilities however were badly in need of repairs. The faucets in our cabin were hooked up backward (hot on the right), and whoever built these had minimal carpentry skills. The screens were coming out and the roofs decayed and losing shingles.

The worst part was it was a warm evening and even when the night cooled off the cabin was hot and stuffy, even when we opened the windows. A ceiling fan would have been a blessing.

One likes ';rustic'; when going to the mountains, but these cabins badly need remodeling.

One bright spot - breakfast at the ';Bakery.'; Awesome ';home-cooking';. The crowd at the place told the story - very popular place.

Avoid the ';Mountain Village Lodge.'; Food was overpriced and less than good.

Jerry's Country Store and Cabins.. not good

as i say, can%26#39;t beat the Danners Cabins...always a joy. next time

  • One Last Insane Pointless Road Trip

I got a job in Portland, the place of my birth and probably where I%26#39;ll die (and Rose City %26#39;Til I Die, at that). I%26#39;ll be moving, more than likely, the weekend of October 11, give or take a day or two.

I was just tossing around a few ';hadn%26#39;t done that yets'; and wondering which ones I should target before leaving. Mind you, I have daughter visitations, so some things WILL get covered over the next few years, but there%26#39;s a few things that won%26#39;t have her interest. I need help winnowing these down to something doable in the next month.

How late in the season is Redfish Lake Lodge open?

    Is Bear Lake worth it?

Do I risk my Honda Civic on the road to Jarbidge? How about Silver City?

Is Yellow Pine a good trip?

From which direction should I approach City of Rocks?

Anyone ever been to Aberdeen? Rockland? Ola? Arbon? Fernwood?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

One Last Insane Pointless Road Trip

Wow, a lot of questions. I%26#39;ll answer one of them. I went to Bear Lake this summer and was not very impressed. Big lake, nice blue color, but too cold to swim, not enough shade to enjoy the shores. Look at a picture and you will have seen everything there is to do there.

One Last Insane Pointless Road Trip

I can give you a couple of answers!

The best way to approach City of Rocks is through Almo. Get off the freeway at the exit for Declo/Pomerelle Ski Resort. The road is paved for most of the way (though last year they were doing construction and it slowed the trip down a bit.)

Redfish Lake Lodge is open through September 27th. More beautiful than usual up there in the fall!

I haven%26#39;t been to Yellowpine or Jarbidge or Silver City (yet.) There is a big fire burning in the Jarbidge area right now, and there%26#39;s been talk of evacuating the town. May not be a good trip right now.

My brother lives between Boring and Sandy. He%26#39;d agree with you about Rose City!

Post Falls- Rivers Cove B and B

Has anyone ever stayed at The River Cove B and B in Post Falls Idaho ?

    Looks nice !

Post Falls- Rivers Cove B and B

Stayed there in August 2008, it%26#39;s as nice as it looks on the website. See my review. We enjoyed it tremendously.

    Things to do for couples?

My husband and I have some extended family in the Post Falls and Spokane area and we are thinking about heading out there in May for a week and running the BLoomsday race. We%26#39;d like to take a couple days to ourselves and stay somewhere in Coeur D%26#39;Alene since I remember it being beautiful, although it%26#39;s been nearly 15 years and I was just in my teens then...

We%26#39;re athletic and like hiking/running, as well as dining and shopping. Not big gamblers though so I don%26#39;t really see us hitting the casino. What is there to do in the area for kind of a romantic, semi-outdoorsy weekend?

    Thanks!

    Things to do for couples?

If you like hiking, dining and shopping, I%26#39;d suggest heading to the downtown area, across from the Resort. You can have breakfast at the resort overlooking the lake then walk to the downtown shopping area and do some looking around. After that, you might want to walk over to Tubbs Hill (very short walk) and do some hiking or take one of the lake cruises which take off at the resort. They have a sunset dinner cruise which is nice, too.

Lots to do in that area and the scenery is beautiful.

    Things to do for couples?

I agree with Tubbs Hill you might even want to hike up their with your lunch and a blanket for a romantic outdoor picnic n a flatter area, over looking the lake, weather permitting of course. You can also have dinner at The Cedars a very nice floating restaurant in Coeir d%26#39;Alene, that has been around for nearly forever.

There are some nice hikes on the Idaho/Montana border (a little over an hour%26#39;s drive from Coeur d%26#39;Alene). I found this website which might be helpful www.trails.com/activity.aspx?area=13179.

I just realized that the link above takes you to the home page of the trails site instead of directly to the map I was looking at. So after clicking on the link, click on the US map and then Idaho. Type in ';mullan'; for the city and click zoom in. It zooms way in so you%26#39;ll need to zoom out a bit, but at least you%26#39;ll be in the right area. You should see Coeur d%26#39;Alene on the map East of Mullan on I-90. Hope this helps!

We love taking a boat ride over to Eddy%26#39;s for a meal if the weather is nice. There is a great view from the outdoor patio. Or, you can get a great sandwich at Hutton%26#39;s and sit on their outdoor patio behind the store. Both great relaxing places with a great view.

  • Hostels in Boise

    Hi folks

I%26#39;ll be in boise for two days next march and was wondering if anyone knew whether the new hostel will be open by then?

If not then my only other option will be the one a bit outside town..

    Hostels in Boise

I haven%26#39;t heard anything about the new hostel opening. There is not much in the way of that here in Idaho, but I am sure you could find some budget hotels too. The prices in Boise are not nearly as huge as big cities.

    Hostels in Boise

i use priceline, and we are over there a few times a month, and always get a great hotel...

I second the Priceline option. I lived in the Boise area for a while and sometimes go back for visits. I used Priceline and put in a $25/night bid and the Red Lion Riverside accepted it. While they aren%26#39;t downtown, they might have the most comfortable beds in the city. They rival any Westin around the world. The Grove Hotel is probably the most overrated hotel in the area. They nickel and dime you to death. I honestly have not heard of any hostels in the downtown area.

    HI

have you checked out ';couch surfing ';google it. it is the new wave for cheap travel.

  • Coeur d Laine-Vancouver-Seattle

Just wondering what you all think is the most cost effective way to travel between Coeur d%26#39;Alaine Seattle Vancouver and return to Arizona? We must be in Coeur d Alaine for a Sunday wedding in August.

    Thank you!!

    Coeur d Laine-Vancouver-Seattle

Vancouver, British Columbia or Vancouver, Washington?

Best connections between Seattle and Coeur d%26#39; Alene are either airline flights into Spokane airport (about 35 miles via Interstate 90 from Coeur d%26#39; Alene) or rent a car in Seattle and drive (about a 5 hour drive, 300 miles). You could also depart from Spokane back to Arizona, fairly good selection of airlines out of Spokane (Southwest, Delta, United, Alaska). Overall cheapest (and because of the time spent at airports maybe the the fastest) may be to fly directly into Seattle and rent car to drive to Vancouver and Spokane.

    Trip Report

I just returned from 5 days in Idaho. It was my first trip to Idaho and had no idea what to expect. The landscape was much more diverse than I had imagined and I had a wonderful time! I stayed in Boise with relatives. First off, I have to say that the people in Boise are some of the nicest people I have ever met (and living in the Midwest, I thought we had the friendliest people!)! On Day 1, we drove from Boise to Ketchum. We had lunch at a great place called the Rustic Moose (which was featured on Rachel Ray!). After walking around Ketchum and the Sun Valley Lodge area, we returned to Boise and had dinner at another great place - El Gallo Giro in Kuna. The food was wonderful and I expecially loved the fresh guacamole made right at your table. On Day 2, we drove to McCall. The drive was absolutely gorgeous, as we followed the Payette River. In McCall, we had brunch at The Pancake House (another delicious meal!) and shopped in the Christmas shop that%26#39;s attached. We then drove to Ponderosa Pines State Park to enjoy the view. That evening, back in Boise, we ate at Epi%26#39;s Basque restaurant. This was a dining experience! The food was wonderful (and more than plenty!) and the people working there were so friendly, it really did feel like having dinner in someone%26#39;s home. Day 3 was spent driving west to Hell%26#39;s Canyon on the Oregon border. The drive through the canyon was also beautiful, and we were excited to spot two bighorn sheep sunning themselves on a cliff. On Day 4, we walked around downtown Boise. We walked to the Capitol building, then to The Grove where we bought some souvenirs at Taters (my co-workers raved about the chocolate-covered potato chips I brought back) and found a great place for lunch - the Brick Oven Bistro. The employees were so friendly and when they found out we were tourists, they got us a map and gave us tips on what to see. After lunch, we visited the Basque area (unfortunately the Basque museum was closed that day) and Boise State University. We stopped at the Boise mall before heading back to my relatives%26#39; house for a leisurely evening. I flew home on Tuesday morning, and the Boise airport gets points from me for being so easy to get around. Again, the security people were so nice and friendly (one security officer even jokingly said ';please take out any liquids or video cameras from your bag....and if you have any chocolate chip cookies, I%26#39;m going to need to take those!';). My entire experience in Idaho was great. I have told everyone at home in Indiana that Idaho is so much more than just potatoes! I look forward to returning!

    Trip Report

Glad you enjoyed your trip, come back and see us again! Sounds like the weather was kind to you. You went to some of my favorite places.

    Trip Report

The weather was beautiful. In fact, when I left Boise the forecast was for a high of 69; when I landed in Indianapolis, it was 41 degrees!

Idaho is a really pleasant surprise, isn%26#39;t it? I think many of the regular locals here on TA have heard me say time and again that Idaho is one of my favorite spots in the US, and it tends to get overlooked by many when making vacation choices.

Thanks for posting this trip report.

  • Fly into Boise or Twin Falls

Searching for flights for our late Jan trip to Sun valley and looking between Twin Falls and Boise. Right now it seems that Twin falls is the better option but a little more money. Times and route are better. I will be flying most likely from Orlando but possibly Tampa. Most of the flight to Boise go all the way to LA for the Layover and Twin Falls is Salt lake City. The driving time and mileage from Twin Falls looks better too. I do not see much said about flying into Twin Falls for visiting Sun valley, mostly Boise or the Sun valley Regional airport and it was much more money for us.

Any reason I should avoid twin Falls?

Fly into Boise or Twin Falls

BG, the only reason to avoid Twin Falls is if you don%26#39;t care to fly on puddle jumpers. You%26#39;re right, the drive time from Twin Falls to Sun Valley is a couple of hours less than from Boise, on a well-maintained 2-lane highway. Joslin Field is a cute little rural airport with one restaurant, several car rental desks, and quick security.

Have a great trip, whatever you decide!

Fly into Boise or Twin Falls

it is better to try and fly into Twin. We usually try that in winter, or just go to Boise. Twin is an easy 1 1/2 hour drive, and Boise is 21/2 hours. If you opt to go into Boise, if there is snow, you go down a few miles further than the regular turn to SV (sorry, after 30 years i only know that you turn by the Pilot station, can%26#39;t miss it...there are signs), you turn towards Shoshone and Gooding. This takes you into Shoshone and hits the road from Twin. It only takes 15 minutes further than the regular road to SV, thru Fairfield, but if you can , i would just fly into Twin. Usually, if in the winter we are having a snow day, the SV airport busses you to Twin anyway. I don%26#39;t chance in the winter, leaving from SV...go to Twin. hope this wasn%26#39;t too hard to understand

Ya I think I understand ya.

good and when you make your final itinerary, i will be more clear...sorry, i am old...ha ha

Horizon Air flies into Sun Valley direct from SEA and LAX. Have you looked into that option? Of course, ticket prices could be more expensive and if Sun Valley is having bad weather the plane will divert to Boise, but they arrange for a bus to get you to Sun Valley.

Flight rates for LAX to SUN just announced: Los Angeles to Sun Valley airfares starting at $169 each way. The LAX-SUN non-stop flights will begin on December 18 and run through March 2009. Check Horizon airline%26#39;s website for details.

Alaska/Horizon last I checked and I have flown the route with them only goes to Seattle from Orlando. Would prefer to not go that far out of the way to get there.
