I would highly reccomend Stanley Idaho. Its a great town squeezed between the Sawtooth Mountains and Idaho%26#39;s famous Salmon River of No Return. You can find all the availiable lodging at www.stanleycc.org

There are two routes to Yellowstone from Boise... the short route via the I-84 freeway (around 6 hours) or the more interesting scenic route over the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway through the Sawtooth Mountains (9 hours drive). If you%26#39;re taking the freeway, I probably wouldn%26#39;t stop, but if you must, the most logical place would probably be Pocatello. If you go the scenic mountain route, I%26#39;d stop in Stanley, which is very close to beautiful Stanley Lake and Redfish Lake. It%26#39;s not halfway there, but there%26#39;s plenty to see and enjoy.

If you decide to take the scenic route, catch Highway 20 as you come out of the mountains and go past Craters of the Moon. You%26#39;ll come out in Idaho Falls, which is just a couple hours from Yellowstone.

Have a great trip!

thanks for the info...we have changed our mind about our upcoming trip...will go to yellowstone when we have more time.

sny suggestions for a weekend trip...staying in Idaho...we are new to Boise.

thank you again

Redfish, Stanley and the Sawtooths are a must!

Look at www.sawtoothcamera.com and you%26#39;ll see why we are going there from Texas.

If you have a kayak or canoe you could check with Idaho River Sports about the May 10 Mother%26#39;s Day Float on the Middle Fork of the Payette River at Crouch. That section of river is class I, but the water this time of year is VERY cold.

You might want to visit Bruneau Dunes State Park, south of Mountain Home. Friday and Saturday evenings the observatory is open. Even if the weather cooperates, this coming weekend will not be great for observing because of the full moon. The 15th and 16th the moon will be waning gibbous, so it will not be up until late. May 22 and 23th it will be waning crescent, and so it will be out of the way.

Some advice on visiting Bruneau Dunes:

There is a $4 parking fee with a self-serve payment box. Bring a pen and the exact amount.

The observatory requests, but does not require donations.

Evening temperatures drop--bring warm clothes.

When the weather gets warmer, there are a lot of mosquitoes--bring repellent.

Red filters are recommended on flashlights to preserve night vision.

The observatory has a restroom that is usually (but not always) open.

There are no food or drinks available--bring what you need.
